#24 - I’m the Ghost That Haunts My Own House

EPISODE #24

This week’s caller describes himself as an optimistic nihilist. Someone who believes there’s nothing after death, and finds that reality freeing. For him, knowing this is the one shot we get makes every choice matter more.

He unexpectedly lost his wife in a sudden car accident right before they even made the first mortgage payment on their home. We talk about the tension between planning for the future and living for today, the danger of saving life for “someday,” and the loneliness that comes when the world keeps moving but you’re still carrying your grief.

Along the way, we discuss the humor that can emerge even in the heaviest moments, why funerary rituals matter more for the living than the dead, and the difference between showing up for someone with a “blanket” versus an “axe.”
