#49 - A Death Doula on What Matters at the End
What would change if we treated death as a human event, not just a medical one?
This call is a practical conversation with an anonymous caller who works as a death doula.
We talk about what they’ve learned being close to the end of life, including what families often misunderstand until they’re in it, and what actually helps when things move quickly. The caller shares how easily someone’s wishes can get lost when nothing has been discussed ahead of time and decisions have to be made under pressure.
A big part of the conversation is about planning, but not in a cold, paperwork way. More in a human way. The kind of preparation that makes it easier for the people around you to advocate for you, support you, and not have to guess. Even if you’re healthy and nowhere near this right now, the timeline is the part none of us gets to know, and the caller talks about working with people much younger than most of us assume.
One of the simplest reframes in the call is also one of the most useful: dying is much more of a human event than it is a medical event. We talk about what that means in real terms and why so many people need more human support than medical support at the end.
